Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI

Chiricahua Community Health Centers’ vision of “Health for All” is a mission I believe in deeply. Pharmacy plays a meaningful role in that work by helping patients access medications, understand their therapy, and achieve better health outcomes.

I am proud to be part of an organization that serves patients regardless of background, circumstance, or ability to pay. Every prescription, counseling, medication review, and patient interaction is an opportunity to improve health, build trust, and support the communities we serve.

David Merrell PharmD’s Background

David grew up in the small mining community of Globe, Arizona. With multiple generations of his family having called Cochise County home, David has a deep appreciation for the region, its history, and the people who make it unique. He is grateful for the opportunity to serve a community that is diverse in its people, rich in history, and deeply connected by shared rural values.

As a young boy, David often accompanied his father to a chemistry lab, where he developed an early appreciation for science and chemistry. That interest ultimately became the catalyst that led him to pursue a career in pharmacy.

After earning his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Roseman University of Health Sciences in Henderson, Nevada, David accepted a position with an independent pharmacy in Douglas, Arizona. That experience helped deepen his appreciation for community pharmacy and the important role pharmacists play in improving access, supporting medication adherence, and building trusted relationships with patients across southeastern Arizona.

David is bilingual in English and Spanish and values the opportunity to support patients through clear communication, medication access, and practical education. His work at Chiricahua reflects a commitment to patient-centered pharmacy care, therapeutic outcomes, and collaboration with providers and care teams.

As Director of Pharmacy, David focuses on expanding access, strengthening pharmacy operations, supporting staff development, and ensuring that pharmacy services remain aligned with Chiricahua’s broader mission of improving health for all.

Outside of work, David is a dedicated husband and father. He enjoys spending time with his family, being outdoors, traveling, and relaxing together during family movie nights.

Leadership Path at Chiricahua

In June 2017, David joined Chiricahua Community Health Centers as the sole member of the pharmacy department, tasked with helping build Chiricahua’s pharmacy program from the ground up. Later that year, he helped open the first Chiricahua Pharmacy in Sierra Vista in October 2017, followed by locations in Bisbee in March 2018, Benson in October 2018, and Douglas in October 2019.

What began as a small part of the organization has grown into a large department of dedicated and enthusiastic pharmacy staff members committed to expanding medication access across Cochise County. David has had the privilege of serving as Director of Pharmacy since July 2019 and has helped guide the development of several key initiatives, including Chiricahua’s clinical pharmacy program, a robust home delivery program, and pharmacy kiosks in Willcox and Sierra Vista.

Through this growth, David’s leadership has focused on improving access, strengthening pharmacy operations, supporting staff development, and ensuring that pharmacy services remain aligned with Chiricahua’s mission of providing “Health for All.”
