Border Health News: Nuvance Health Explores Binational Training Partnership with Chiricahua Community Health Centers
At Chiricahua Community Health Centers, we believe that providing exceptional care means understanding the unique, interconnected world our patients live in. In early May, we had the incredible opportunity to showcase this firsthand when we hosted a four-person delegation from Nuvance Health right here in our border communities.
Global Health Meets Border Health
Nuvance Health operates a renowned global border health program for medical students and residents, sponsoring clinical rotations across the world: primarily in developing regions of Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean.
So, how did they find their way to Cochise County?
Recognizing our deep commitment to underserved populations along the U.S.-Mexico border, Nuvance reached out to Chiricahua as a potential domestic rotation site. We knew that to truly understand our community, they needed to experience the heart of it. We designed a schedule focused on Douglas, Elfrida, and the surrounding border region to give them an authentic look at the intersection of rural medicine and border healthcare.
A Truly Binational News
Health doesn’t stop at a border wall, and neither does our work. When we asked the Nuvance team if they would consider placing future students on both sides of the border, their response was an enthusiastic yes.
As part of their itinerary, the delegation spent a powerful day in Agua Prieta, Sonora. There, they toured the local hospital and met with our vital Mexican healthcare partners, gaining a holistic, binational perspective on how community health functions in a border ecosystem.
Looking to the Future
While this visit was purely exploratory, designed to see if our region could support future student rotations without any immediate commitments, the impact was undeniable.
Delegation leader Bulat Ziganshin, MD, PhD, shared that the Nuvance team left deeply impressed by the sheer breadth of Chiricahua’s work, the strength of our mission, and the unwavering commitment of our staff to serving Cochise County.
According to Dr. Ziganshin, the visit was “eye-opening,” offering a rare and valuable opportunity to examine how border health, community health, and global health intersect. From Douglas and Bisbee to Elfrida and Agua Prieta, the delegation walked away with a profound understanding of the unique educational opportunities our region has to offer the next generation of medical professionals.
We are incredibly grateful for the thoughtful, inspiring discussions shared during this visit. As we look ahead, we are excited about the potential to re-establish a meaningful, mutually beneficial partnership that enriches global health education while continuing to elevate care in our community.
