As summer winds down and a new school year approaches, families across Cochise County are tackling their annual back-to-school checklists. Recognizing that preparing for the classroom goes beyond books and supply lists, Chiricahua Community Health Centers, Inc. (Chiricahua) is out in full force to ensure local students have the tools, and the support they need for a healthy, successful year.

Throughout July and August, Chiricahua’s dedicated Community Health Workers (CHWs) have been hitting the road, attending back-to-school events across the region. Partnering alongside other generous local businesses, community organizations, and school districts, the CHW team has been meeting families where they are to hand out essential school supplies and personal health items.
Chiricahua CHWs have attended to students from Benson, Bisbee, Bowie/San Simon, Elfrida, and Willcox so far with the big culmination scheduled for Saturday, August 1st in Douglas!
For Chiricahua’s Community Health Workers, these events are about far more than handing out supplies. They offer a valuable opportunity to build trust, connect families with vital community health resources, and foster a strong foundation for the year ahead.

“Back-to-school season can be both an exciting and stressful time for families.” said Angelica Lopez, Community Engagement Supervisor, “…Being out in the community allows us to alleviate a little bit of that financial pressure while connecting directly with parents and students to let them know we are here to support their health and wellness all year long.”
The collective efforts across Cochise County highlights the power of community collaboration, ensuring that geographic location or financial hurdles do not stand in the way of a child’s education and well-being.
