Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI

I believe in community medicine.  In order to provide the highest quality and most comprehensive care to our patients, we need partners.  At CCHCI we have care coordination, nursing expertise, and administrative support to practice the kind of medicine that everyone deserves.

DARLENE'S BACKGROUND

Raised by a single mom, Dr. Darlene Melk’s journey to becoming Chief Medical Officer at Chiricahua Community Health Center, Inc is both impressive and inspiring. As the daughter of a Cuban refugee, Spanish is Dr. Melk’s first language, and she remains bilingual to this day. Diagnosed with Type One diabetes at age eight, Dr. Melk knew early on she wanted to be a doctor to take care of children like her and set her mind to realizing that dream early on.

After graduating from the University of Arizona Medical School and completing her residency training at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where she was recognized as “Senior Resident of the Year”, Dr. Melk stayed true to her passion in serving children with barriers to care. Her first job was working for a Federally Qualified Health Center or FQHC in Phoenix and knowing that she could see any child, regardless of the circumstances into which they were born, solidified her resolve to serve in the FQHC environment.

Dr. Melk joined Chiricahua in 2010 as a Community Pediatrician and over the next ten years served as Director of Community Pediatrics and Director of Community Medicine before becoming Chief Medical Officer in 2020. She was a member of First Things First Regional Council from 2016/2023 and was the Chair for the Council from 2019/2023. In 2024, Dr. Melk was appointed by Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs to the Arizona Early Childhood Development and Health Board, which is the First Things First State level directorate. Dr Melk has also served as a Board Member of the Western Clinician Network since 2021 and was elected President for a one-year term in 2023. Dr. Melk additionally served on the Steering Committee for Douglas Education Partnership Council from 2017/2023 and is currently Chair of Pediatric Leaders Peer Network Committee for the Arizona Association of Community Health Centers.

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Dr. Melk completed her undergraduate studies at Arizona State University Tempe with a B.S. in Biochemistry.  She went on to complete Medical School at the University of Arizona in Tucson and did her Pediatric Residency at Phoenix Children’s Hospital/Maricopa Medical Center.  Dr. Melk was recognized as a Certified Physician Executive in 2022 by the American Association of Physician Leaders.  She is currently completing her Masters of Applied Science in Population Health through Johns Hopkins University with an expected graduation in 2027.

Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI

I believe that ALL people deserve access to excellent healthcare. I believe that what we do every single day at CCHCI is important and meaningful in ways beyond what words can even express. I believe that only through the diligence of teamwork can CCHCI be an exceptional organization. I am inspired and driven forward daily by the conviction and talent of my colleagues who believe the same.

JONATHAN'S BACKGROUND

Dr. Jonathan Melk is a community pediatrician committed to eliminating health disparities in the borderlands of rural southeastern Arizona. Raised on a small family farm, he developed a keen drive to “make a positive impact” for rural people early in life. Later, public health work amongst children living in poverty in both the United States and abroad resulted in his pursuit of a medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City and training as a pediatrician at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

To master Spanish, Dr. Melk led public health and community health worker projects in Costa Rica with the intention of one day practicing in a global health environment. He was long fascinated with the US/Mexico border, and that combined with his deep interest in working with rural and medically underserved communities brought him to Cochise County, Arizona in 2006 to serve as the first pediatrician in the border community of Douglas, Arizona with the not-for-profit Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), Chiricahua Community Health Centers, Inc. (CCHCI) (www.cchci.org).

He quickly became captured by the comprehensive, community-based, mission-driven healthcare provided to all people regardless of ability to pay made possible by the FQHC healthcare model embodied by CCHCI. He became Director of Community Pediatrics in 2008, then Chief Medical Officer in 2012.

Beginning in 2014, he assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer and is honored to lead a team of highly capable, motivated professionals who are dedicated to the health and well-being of the people of Cochise County (a service area the size of Rhode Island and Connecticut combined). Since 2014, CCHCI has grown rapidly from an approximately $13 million budget to $65 million budget (FY25) staffed with ~80 providers and ~465 employees. Dr. Melk’s primary strategy to overcome the significant challenges faced by Chiricahua has been to recruit a team of professionals with experience and commitment unheard of in many other under resourced rural and board regions.

Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI

I believe in CCHCI’s mission because I know it makes a difference in everyday people’s lives. My community is healthier. I believe because I can see my family, friends, co-workers and neighbors living longer and better lives because of the quality healthcare provided to them regardless of their financial situation.

GARY'S BACKGROUND

My passions have, for as long as I can remember, been in Accounting, Business, Finance, Economics, etc.  Since I was an adolescent balancing the family check book, I have loved taking care of “the books.”  Since getting my accounting degree from the University of Akron, I purposefully directed my employment to obtain as diverse a background as possible in all types of business.  I worked in managing personnel and profitability; in banking setting rates and creating new financial products; and in contracting and negotiating with purchasing agents.

I became a Certified Public Accountant and managed the business operations of the IT department of a very large corporation.  I really had no conscious idea where this was leading me.  I just knew that I was happy and loved what I was doing.  I love helping fulfill the dreams of the dreamers.  I have never  been a visionary; I am better suited to making another’s vision that I truly believe in, a reality.  And so, I find myself here at CCHCI at the peak of my knowledge and expertise.  I will help us be the best of the best.

Born and raised in Douglas, Az, I am the oldest of three siblings and was the first generation to attend college and graduate. I attended Loretto, Douglas High School and Cochise College. After becoming a Registered Nurse, I moved to Tucson where I furthered my nursing career and gained a variety of experience in the intensive care unit at UMC-South Campus, while completing my Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Grand Canyon University. I then worked as a research nurse with the University of Arizona while I completed my Doctor of Nursing Practice at Arizona State University- Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation. During my training as a Nurse Practitioner I became aware of the need for providers throughout Cochise County, which motivated me to complete most of my rotations in Sierra Vista and Douglas.

My medical passion is to contribute to my community and those undeserved while managing health issues, reaching a healthy balance, and focusing on prevention.

I grew up in Douglas with amazing parents and two overprotective older brothers. I always did well in school and stayed busy by participating in sports. I especially loved playing soccer although I wasn’t a very skilled player. Later, I decided to go to college in Tucson, not only did this make sense financially but also was close enough for me to visit my family often. I later started my own family, marrying my husband Josh in 2008 and later having children, Jay and Lucia. We like to travel as a family and we visit many places including my husband’s home state of Pennsylvania. Although it is fun to visit other places, and living in Tucson for nearly 17 years was fun, I have always been called back home.

In 2021 I moved my family to Douglas, my home town, so that I can spend more time with my parents and to provide medical care to the community that gave me such a great childhood. My husband needed much convincing, but after being here a few months he completely understands and appreciates the small-town appeal. It’s a place where we easily connect with our neighbors, where recommendations are made word-of-mouth not through a google search, and where my children get to spend most of their day with their grandparents who love them so much and treat them so well. My entire family is happy to be in Douglas. Thank you to my home-town community for welcoming me back and for allowing me to help with your medical needs. I take the job and the responsibility very seriously and it’s one I hope to have for many years to come.

After completing general course work at Cochise College I then moved on to study at the University of Arizona. I have a bachelor’s degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology and in Nursing. While working as a bedside cardiac nurse at a large Tucson hospital I completed my Master’s in Nursing practice with a focus in Family Nurse Practitioner in 2015, and then earned my degree of Doctor of Nursing Practice in the spring of 2016. That makes me a doctor-nurse 🙂

Practice Interests:

I love caring for patients of all ages. I especially like interacting with teens.

I believe that there should be healthcare for all. CCHCI has this mission and is doing everything to provide healthcare for everyone. I am happy to be a part of a great team that is working towards the same goal.

MY BACKGROUND

I was raised in Douglas my whole life. As I attended school, I always knew I wanted to do something medical. I would always tell my father that I wanted to be like him and save lives; He was a paramedic. I remember always checking on my grandfather with my little plastic stethoscope when I was a child. As I grew up, I took an interest in nursing. I first became a certified nursing assistant to test to see if I could make it in the medical field.  Not only did I love it, but I loved connecting with my patients. I went on to be an RN. My RN background consists of  ER in Douglas, Bisbee, and Sierra Vista. I was able to work in oncology/hematology while I lived in Tucson and also did Med Surg/Tele in Louisiana. When moving back to Douglas, I knew I wanted to give back to this community and county. I now have the skills and education to do so. I have a son and daughter who are a part of this community.

My goal is to be a resource in achieving optimal health for the children in Cochise County that I have the privilege of caring for.

DEANNA'S BACKGROUND

I was raised in St. David, where I currently live with my family. I am the mother of seven children and have two grandchildren. I have worked in the healthcare setting my entire adult life, first as a unit clerk, then as a medical transcriptionist, finally becoming a nurse in 2015. My nursing background includes neonatal intensive care, labor and delivery, and earning an additional certification in wound, ostomy and continence nursing with a focus on the pediatric population.

Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI

I believe in the mission of CCHCI, because it strives to break down social and economic barriers to health for all members of its surrounding community. I am excited to be a part of a growing team that works every day to bring high quality, evidence-based health care to as many children as possible irrespective of their family’s ability to pay.

DEVYN'S BACKGROUND

Growing up, I experienced first-hand the barriers to health that come with living in a rural community. After studying architecture in college, I worked as a patient advocate filing insurance claims for nutritional counseling and advocating on behalf of patients for comprehensive care. My desire to gain a better understanding of how social and economic factors affect the quality of patient care is what led me to pursue my Masters of Public Health (MPH) at Dartmouth College. As an MPH intern for the Women, Infants, and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program (WIC), I witnessed the important role that families play in helping to prevent nutrition-related chronic illnesses that begin in childhood. I attended Yale University to train in pediatric primary care and diabetes management with the professional goal of returning to a rural community where I could work every day to educate families about disease prevention, so that they have the tools to grow healthy families regardless of their circumstance. Outside of my clinical role, I enjoy trail running and spending time exploring Cochise County with my husband, 2 sons and 2 dogs.

I met my husband in Miami while practicing pediatric neurology. We married in 2019 and moved to Iowa so that he could pursue a fellowship in pediatric hematology and oncology. While living in Iowa, I worked in school-based clinics and witnessed the barriers to primary and preventive health care that exist in this country and the need for community collaboration to deliver this care. Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI

In Line with the mission of Chiricahua, I believe in putting patients first and providing a high level of care, no matter who comes to the clinic's doorstep. Chiricahua also allows the opportunity to partner with the community outside of the clinic doors.

JEFFREY'S BACKGROUND

I enjoy being a pediatrician because I work directly with kids on their immediate health concerns while simultaneously working with the community to prevent those same health concerns in future years. Before entering medical school, I spent a year in the urban Bronx of New York and then the next year in rural India. Both of these experiences trained me to look at the upstream factors of health, the aspects of life that affect patient’s health before they ever arrive in the clinic. These years showed me the power of community workers to care for their local population better than any doctor could. In residency, I evaluated the effectiveness of community workers to improve development in early childhood among local residents.

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Dr Melk received his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City and trained as a pediatrician at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

JOINED CHIRICAHUA IN 2021

I love caring for patients of all ages. I especially like interacting with teens.

Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI

My goal is to get to know children and their care-takers, partnering with the entire family, working together to provide individualized, comprehensive care. Chiricahua allows me to practice this kind of medicine.

KATHLEEN'S BACKGROUND

My fond recollection of the physician who cared for me from birth to 21yrs inspired me throughout my life to become a pediatrician. Beyond my seventeen years of clinical experience caring for children, motherhood has complimented and enriched my practice as a pediatrician beyond my expectations. The experiences I share with my husband as we raise our young sons and daughter, are both exciting and enlightening, and my passion for a child’s well-being continues to grow. My own breastfeeding challenges lead to my interest in breastfeeding medicine. As a International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), I hope to help guide mothers in their own breastfeeding journey.

Outside of medicine I share with my family a love of the great outdoors and strive to live a healthful, meaningful life. As an Army spouse, we’ve enjoyed experiences serving the nation while exploring the country. Our interests in the Southwest brought us back to southern Arizona.

I believe in the mission of CCHCI because with the help of a highly professional and well trained staff, we recognize the need to deliver the same standard of high quality medical care--equal to that found in metropolitan areas--to the surrounding rural communities.

MILLA'S BACKGROUND

I grew up in a military family in former Eastern Germany and several Republics of former Soviet Union. I was inspired to become a doctor by my mother who worked as a nurse in a children’s hospital. I  regard a medical profession as the most rewarding, challenging and exciting career possible.  I consider a great honor to take care children and their families.

The mission statement is simple and clear: CARING FOR PATIENTS and BUILDING HEALTHY COMMUNITIES. It’s truly reflected in each person associated with the Chiricahua family. I am eager to join in, learn from, and help reach this great vision…
HEALTH FOR ALL.

NORI'S BACKGROUND

I came to Chiricahua having spent most of my career in central and western Pennsylvania, caring for the young patients and their parents, and enjoying the immense rewards, trust and the special relationships with each family as a general pediatrician in these small towns. But my great passion is to continue supporting medical missions with a ministry nearby serving the Tarahumara and Pima peoples in north central Mexico. In just a short time here in Cochise County, I have been so impressed with all the levels of this organization, the mission and motivation to help the various groups and the families here, and the vision and creativity to reach each individual to meet his or her health need

When I finished school in 2001, I started working as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurse.  I later decided to return to school to be a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.  My desire was to provide health care to children who did not have ready access to health care.  My first job as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner was in the mountains of northern Georgia where we provided health care to impoverished children in the area.  Most of the children were from Guatemalan-Indian descent.  Care included a community clinic, mobile unit, and health fairs.  I have been serving CCHCI’s communities since June of 2012 and I love the people I serve and work with.

Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI

I believe in helping people of this community and providing care for all, regardless of whether they can pay. I enjoy the teamwork that comes with CCHCI to meet the mission of providing health for all.

MY BACKGROUND

I was born and raised in Douglas AZ and attended A Avenue Elementary School, Paul Huber Middle School, Douglas High School and Cochise College, where I became a Registered Nurse. I worked at Canyon Vista Medical Center for 4 years, commuting back and forth to Douglas. As I was about to start my family of 2 boys, Cain and Xavier, with my husband Fabian, I decided I no longer wanted to commute and I wanted to do more for my community; the community where I would raise my family. I took a part time job at DCI, a dialysis clinic in Douglas and began to attend the University of Phoenix where I received my Masters of Science in Nursing – FNP.

I enjoy spending time with my family, we are always doing something; barbecuing, going to the park, hiking or at a baseball game.

My medical passion is to provide health care to the community that raised me.

Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI

This organization was founded on the principle of bringing quality health care to even the most needy and vulnerable. While anyone can experience behavioral health difficulties, it is especially prevalent among those with the least access to essential resources. I love that Chiricahua can help bring these essential services to those who need it most.

JONATHAN'S BACKGROUND

I have long been fascinated by the mind and loved helping those with struggles with their mental health. I initially studied psychology, obtaining my bachelor’s degree in that field. However, I decided to change to nursing, figuring I would be able to better care for my family. In 2015, I joined the Behavioral Health Unit at Canyon Vista Medical Center, marrying my two fields. In 2016, I began pursuing further nursing education with the goal to become a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. In 2017, I became the director of the Behavioral Health Unit. In 2020, I completed my education, and in 2021, I obtained my license as an NP. In late 2021, I joined Chiricahua Community Health Centers, Inc.

More important than my career is my family. I love my wife and my five children more than anything else.

KATHRYN'S BACKGROUND

I have had the amazing opportunity to engage in the field of mental health from the beginning of my career as a registered nurse. Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI

Everyone has a different, personal definition of “health.” Whatever that definition may be, I believe that all of us deserve choices when it comes to our physical and mental health, as well as someone who we trust to help us navigate those choices. I work each day to offer those choices and that trust to our patients as part of Chiricahua’s mission of “Health for All.”

PATRICK'S BACKGROUND

Until I became a nurse, I followed a very scattered professional path. I have worked in a bakery, home construction, driving a tractor for a marina boatyard, teaching elementary school, teaching college, bartending, and as an innkeeper. I lived in 11 different states as well as Costa Rica, Spain, and 3 years in Chile. Frankly, this chapter of my life was pretty fun but I also got pretty lost! In the process of being found (by my wife), I decided to become a nurse and began working for a local in-patient behavioral health facility here in Cochise County. My experience there encouraged me to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Now, I work alongside my wife at CCHCI: the best possible destination along this wild and winding road that is life!

WHY I BELIEVE IN THE MISSION OF CCHCI: “HEALTH FOR ALL”

Everyone deserves access to quality healthcare that allows them to enjoy life to the fullest! Nutrition, specifically, can have a large impact on our day-to-day life and long-term health. I’m passionate about helping everyone in our community build a healthy relationship with food.

KIRSTEN'S BACKGROUND

Throughout my life I have always had a keen interest in health sciences. The body is so amazing! I developed a passion for utilizing nutrition as a tool to enrich and enhance health and quality of life. During my education, much of my research and emphasis revolved around women’s health, specifically polycystic ovarian syndrome, and disordered eating. I learned just how important it is to have a good relationship with food for both our physical and psychological wellbeing.
Following my undergraduate degree, I had the opportunity to participate in an internship working in various facilities throughout Cochise County and pursue my master's degree in dietetic administration. I am honored to be a member of the Chiricahua team and am excited to continue serving this wonderful community.

JOINED CHIRICAHUA IN 2021

Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI

I believe in the mission of Chiricahua because it states very clearly “health care of all” and mental health care is such an important part of one’s overall health and wellbeing. Being able to assist Chiricahua with providing quality mental health care to all of our patients means being able to help change the overall wellbeing of all Cochise County one patient, one family and one community at a time. I look forward to bringing mental health care to all for many years to come.

TAMIKA'S BACKGROUND

I was born in Virginia but lived in several states and countries due to being part of a military family. I went to Virginia Polytechnical Institute and University (Virginia Tech) for undergrad degree in Family and Child Development. I received my Master’s Degree from a joint program with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCA&T). I am a current doctoral candidate with Cummings Graduate Institute for my Doctorate of Behavioral Health.

My experiences of living all over the world encouraged me to be interested in working with people from all walks of life. Having worked with both children and adults in both a crisis and chronic case management setting I feel very passionate about my ability to assist people with all mental health questions and concerns.

I enjoy spending time with my two wonderful children, 14 and 16, my awesome husband of two years, and all the wonderful family I have located in the area.  Studying for my doctorate program has taken away all of my hobbies but my faith and my love of travel still hold a special place in my heart.

Victor Romero is a Registered Pharmacist providing patient-centered pharmacy services at Chiricahua Health Centers. With decades of experience across multiple states, he is dedicated to improving access to medications, education, and overall health outcomes for the communities he serves.

Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI

I believe in "Health for All" and the unique role Chiricahua plays in assuring that people get the healthcare they need. By breaking down barriers to healthcare such as low income, lack of transportation, cultural or language differences, and access to educational programs, Chiricahua provides a vital service to the health and well-being of underserved populations in Southeast Arizona.

Background & Experience

Victor was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and was inspired to pursue a career in pharmacy by his uncle, who owned an independent pharmacy in Española. He admired the accessibility pharmacists have to the public and the meaningful role they play in improving patients’ lives.

After graduating from the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy, Victor went on to oversee pharmacy practice across several western states, including Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, and Washington.

This breadth of experience has given him a unique perspective on how pharmacists connect with patients across diverse communities. For much of the past two decades, he has served patients in Sierra Vista and takes pride in continuing to care for his local community.
