Our leadership and providers come from across the country, bringing a wide range of professional and personal experiences. While our backgrounds and perspectives vary, we are united in CCHCI’s commitment to ensuring that ALL people have access to excellent healthcare.
As a patient and member of the community I experience the excellent medical and dental care that Chiricahua provides to the community. I also find to be important that Chiricahua aids the helpless and serves the most remote settlements in the county. Therefore, I am proud of being part of this team.
I chose to work for Chiricahua because it offered an excellent opportunity to work for a great cause.

Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI
The ability to provide health care should not be based on a financial incentive. To be able to put a smile on patients’ faces is my personal measure of success.
I was born and raised in Phoenix. I attended the University of Arizona where I earned my undergraduate degree in physiological sciences. I then returned to the greater Phoenix area to be near my family and to complete my graduate studies. I was a member of the inaugural class of Midwestern University’s College of Dental Medicine. While in school, I was selected as a National Health Services Corps Scholar and upon graduation, relocated to Southern Arizona to provide oral health care to those of the Greater Cochise County area. I have really found a passion in the public health field and am very grateful for the experiences I have had thus far with CCHCI. I am a member of the American Dental Association, Arizona Dental Society, Southern Arizona Dental Society, and the Academy of General Dentistry.

Raised by a single mom, Dr. Darlene Melk’s journey to becoming Chief Medical Officer at Chiricahua Community Health Center, Inc is both impressive and inspiring. As the daughter of a Cuban refugee, Spanish is Dr. Melk’s first language, and she remains bilingual to this day. Diagnosed with Type One diabetes at age eight, Dr. Melk knew early on she wanted to be a doctor to take care of children like her and set her mind to realizing that dream early on.
After graduating from the University of Arizona Medical School and completing her residency training at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where she was recognized as “Senior Resident of the Year”, Dr. Melk stayed true to her passion in serving children with barriers to care. Her first job was working for a Federally Qualified Health Center or FQHC in Phoenix and knowing that she could see any child, regardless of the circumstances into which they were born, solidified her resolve to serve in the FQHC environment.
Dr. Melk joined Chiricahua in 2010 as a Community Pediatrician and over the next ten years served as Director of Community Pediatrics and Director of Community Medicine before becoming Chief Medical Officer in 2020. She was a member of First Things First Regional Council from 2016/2023 and was the Chair for the Council from 2019/2023. In 2024, Dr. Melk was appointed by Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs to the Arizona Early Childhood Development and Health Board, which is the First Things First State level directorate. Dr Melk has also served as a Board Member of the Western Clinician Network since 2021 and was elected President for a one-year term in 2023. Dr. Melk additionally served on the Steering Committee for Douglas Education Partnership Council from 2017/2023 and is currently Chair of Pediatric Leaders Peer Network Committee for the Arizona Association of Community Health Centers.
I believe that ALL people deserve access to excellent healthcare. I believe that what we do every single day at CCHCI is important and meaningful in ways beyond what words can even express. I believe that only through the diligence of teamwork can CCHCI be an exceptional organization. I am inspired and driven forward daily by the conviction and talent of my colleagues who believe the same.
Dr. Jonathan Melk is a community pediatrician committed to eliminating health disparities in the borderlands of rural southeastern Arizona. Raised on a small family farm, he developed a keen drive to “make a positive impact” for rural people early in life. Later, public health work amongst children living in poverty in both the United States and abroad resulted in his pursuit of a medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City and training as a pediatrician at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.
To master Spanish, Dr. Melk led public health and community health worker projects in Costa Rica with the intention of one day practicing in a global health environment. He was long fascinated with the US/Mexico border, and that combined with his deep interest in working with rural and medically underserved communities brought him to Cochise County, Arizona in 2006 to serve as the first pediatrician in the border community of Douglas, Arizona with the not-for-profit Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), Chiricahua Community Health Centers, Inc. (CCHCI) (www.cchci.org).
He quickly became captured by the comprehensive, community-based, mission-driven healthcare provided to all people regardless of ability to pay made possible by the FQHC healthcare model embodied by CCHCI. He became Director of Community Pediatrics in 2008, then Chief Medical Officer in 2012.
Beginning in 2014, he assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer and is honored to lead a team of highly capable, motivated professionals who are dedicated to the health and well-being of the people of Cochise County (a service area the size of Rhode Island and Connecticut combined). Since 2014, CCHCI has grown rapidly from an approximately $13 million budget to $65 million budget (FY25) staffed with ~80 providers and ~465 employees. Dr. Melk’s primary strategy to overcome the significant challenges faced by Chiricahua has been to recruit a team of professionals with experience and commitment unheard of in many other under resourced rural and board regions.
Dr Melk received his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City and trained as a pediatrician at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Born and raised in Douglas, Az, I am the oldest of three siblings and was the first generation to attend college and graduate. I attended Loretto, Douglas High School and Cochise College. After becoming a Registered Nurse, I moved to Tucson where I furthered my nursing career and gained a variety of experience in the intensive care unit at UMC-South Campus, while completing my Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Grand Canyon University. I then worked as a research nurse with the University of Arizona while I completed my Doctor of Nursing Practice at Arizona State University- Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation. During my training as a Nurse Practitioner I became aware of the need for providers throughout Cochise County, which motivated me to complete most of my rotations in Sierra Vista and Douglas.
My medical passion is to contribute to my community and those undeserved while managing health issues, reaching a healthy balance, and focusing on prevention.
I enjoy spending time with my family, riding my bike, snowboarding, and working on whichever new project I have in my sights. My family and I like to travel a lot and try to visit new places. I grew up in Douglas with amazing parents and two overprotective older brothers. I always did well in school and stayed busy by participating in sports. I especially loved playing soccer although I wasn’t a very skilled player. Later, I decided to go to college in Tucson, not only did this make sense financially but also was close enough for me to visit my family often. I later started my own family, marrying my husband Josh in 2008 and later having children, Jay and Lucia. We like to travel as a family and we visit many places including my husband’s home state of Pennsylvania. Although it is fun to visit other places, and living in Tucson for nearly 17 years was fun, I have always been called back home.
In 2021 I moved my family to Douglas, my home town, so that I can spend more time with my parents and to provide medical care to the community that gave me such a great childhood. My husband needed much convincing, but after being here a few months he completely understands and appreciates the small-town appeal. It’s a place where we easily connect with our neighbors, where recommendations are made word-of-mouth not through a google search, and where my children get to spend most of their day with their grandparents who love them so much and treat them so well. My entire family is happy to be in Douglas. Thank you to my home-town community for welcoming me back and for allowing me to help with your medical needs. I take the job and the responsibility very seriously and it’s one I hope to have for many years to come.
After completing general course work at Cochise College I then moved on to study at the University of Arizona. I have a bachelor’s degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology and in Nursing. While working as a bedside cardiac nurse at a large Tucson hospital I completed my Master’s in Nursing practice with a focus in Family Nurse Practitioner in 2015, and then earned my degree of Doctor of Nursing Practice in the spring of 2016. That makes me a doctor-nurse 🙂

DEVYN'S BACKGROUND
Growing up, I experienced first-hand the barriers to health that come with living in a rural community. After studying architecture in college, I worked as a patient advocate filing insurance claims for nutritional counseling and advocating on behalf of patients for comprehensive care. My desire to gain a better understanding of how social and economic factors affect the quality of patient care is what led me to pursue my Masters of Public Health (MPH) at Dartmouth College. As an MPH intern for the Women, Infants, and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program (WIC), I witnessed the important role that families play in helping to prevent nutrition-related chronic illnesses that begin in childhood. I attended Yale University to train in pediatric primary care and diabetes management with the professional goal of returning to a rural community where I could work every day to educate families about disease prevention, so that they have the tools to grow healthy families regardless of their circumstance. Outside of my clinical role, I enjoy trail running and spending time exploring Cochise County with my husband, son and 2 dogs.

Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI
In Line with the mission of Chiricahua, I believe in putting patients first and providing a high level of care, no matter who comes to the clinic's doorstep. Chiricahua also allows the opportunity to partner with the community outside of the clinic doors.
JEFFREY'S BACKGROUND
I enjoy being a pediatrician because I work directly with kids on their immediate health concerns while simultaneously working with the community to prevent those same health concerns in future years. Before entering medical school, I spent a year in the urban Bronx of New York and then the next year in rural India. Both of these experiences trained me to look at the upstream factors of health, the aspects of life that affect patient’s health before they ever arrive in the clinic. These years showed me the power of community workers to care for their local population better than any doctor could. In residency, I evaluated the effectiveness of community workers to improve development in early childhood among local residents.

Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI
My goal is to get to know children and their care-takers, partnering with the entire family, working together to provide individualized, comprehensive care. Chiricahua allows me to practice this kind of medicine.
KATHLEEN'S BACKGROUND
My fond recollection of the physician who cared for me from birth to 21yrs inspired me throughout my life to become a pediatrician. Beyond my seventeen years of clinical experience caring for children, motherhood has complimented and enriched my practice as a pediatrician beyond my expectations. The experiences I share with my husband as we raise our young sons and daughter, are both exciting and enlightening, and my passion for a child’s well-being continues to grow. My own breastfeeding challenges lead to my interest in breastfeeding medicine. As a International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), I hope to help guide mothers in their own breastfeeding journey.
Outside of medicine I share with my family a love of the great outdoors and strive to live a healthful, meaningful life. As an Army spouse, we’ve enjoyed experiences serving the nation while exploring the country. Our interests in the Southwest brought us back to southern Arizona.

Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI
Chiricahua’s mission aligns with my values and goals as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and a Public Health advocate. Providing healthcare for all is essential. All children deserve affordable, competent care. The Chiricahua philosophy of combining individual and population health leads to true accessibility and is both inspiring and necessary. Chiricahua has found innovative ways to reach local communities and eliminate barriers to healthcare. I work at Chiricahua, because as we care for individuals, we focus on prevention, guidance and community level concerns. Here, we understand that children and adolescents have lives outside the exam room, and those concerns must also be addressed to provide the best possible care.

NORI'S BACKGROUND
I came to Chiricahua having spent most of my career in central and western Pennsylvania, caring for the young patients and their parents, and enjoying the immense rewards, trust and the special relationships with each family as a general pediatrician in these small towns. But my great passion is to continue supporting medical missions with a ministry nearby serving the Tarahumara and Pima peoples in north central Mexico. MY BACKGROUND
I was born and raised in Douglas AZ and attended A Avenue Elementary School, Paul Huber Middle School, Douglas High School and Cochise College, where I became a Registered Nurse. I worked at Canyon Vista Medical Center for 4 years, commuting back and forth to Douglas. As I was about to start my family of 2 boys, Cain and Xavier, with my husband Fabian, I decided I no longer wanted to commute and I wanted to do more for my community; the community where I would raise my family. I took a part time job at DCI, a dialysis clinic in Douglas and began to attend the University of Phoenix where I received my Masters of Science in Nursing – FNP.
I enjoy spending time with my family, we are always doing something; barbecuing, going to the park, hiking or at a baseball game.
My medical passion is to provide health care to the community that raised me.

I am excited to be in an environment that allows Health for All and will go above and beyond to provide the care. Chiricahua is providing health care services to patients that may have otherwise given up on getting quality medical, dental, and pharmacy services. As part of the team, I can now help make sure that patients can get medications needed and not leave empty handed because of cost.
JOINED CCHCI IN 2021Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI
Providing the best patient care to all patients, not just to the patients that are within proximity but those who are in the outer areas of Cochise County. Health for All is reaching the unreachable.
In 2004 I started working in a local retail pharmacy as a clerk. Quickly realizing that I loved helping the community and providing the best customer care, I began training as a Pharmacy Technician and passed my Pharmacy Technician Certification Boards test in 2008. From there I have worked in many specialty positions including Lead Technician, Inventory Specialist, and Training Technician. When I came to CCHCI, I took over the Pharmacy Home Delivery Program and improved and changed our beloved CCHCI patients’ care. I am excited to continue to help our patients moving forward in this new position.

Growing up in a rural community and now finding myself residing in a rural community as an adult, I love that Chiricahua’s mission is to provide “Health for All.” This is such an incredible mission, and it can mean something different to so many people. However, at the end of the day, the goal is to provide affordable, quality, caring health services to everyone in need including those living in truly remote areas of Cochise County. I love that Chiricahua gives back to the community and is able to reach individuals that would not receive these services otherwise.

Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI
I believe "Health for All" is a great and noble mission. I believe this because making healthcare accessible to all provides remedy for those currently in need and prevents future health & wellness adversities. It is a privilege to be part of the Chiricahua team.
Cochise County has been home for most of my life. I love the desert people of southern Arizona. My father has been a pharmacist for almost 30 years. He introduced me to the profession “that has allowed home to improve the lives of so many people.” I hope to continue to follow in his footsteps and be a means of great, helping others to improve their health and wellness. I feel Chiricahua gives me this opportunity.

Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI
Healthcare is a fundamental human right and I think everyone should have access to quality healthcare regardless of their ability to pay. Chiricahua’s mission of “Health for All” helps fulfil this right by striving to meet the health needs of the most vulnerable population in Cochise County and beyond. The availability of programs at Chiricahua to assist patients in meeting their healthcare and medication needs helps overcome many barriers to access to care. As a healthcare provider, I am happy to be a part of that mission.

Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI
I believe in "Health for All" and the unique role Chiricahua plays in assuring that people get the healthcare they need. By breaking down barriers to healthcare such as low income, lack of transportation, cultural or language differences, and access to educational programs, Chiricahua provides a vital service to the health and well being of the under served populations in Southeast Arizona.
I was born in Albuquerque, NM and was inspired to pursue the career of pharmacist by my uncle who owned an independent pharmacy in Espanola, a small town in Northern New Mexico. I always admired the accessibility he as a pharmacist had to the public and how pivotal his role was in improving the lives of his patients. Upon graduating from the University of New Mexico, I have been fortunate to oversee pharmacy practice throughout several western states including Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas and Washington. The diversity of such experience has given me a unique perspective on different techniques pharmacists use to connect with their patients in different geographical settings. I hope to apply the knowledge I’ve acquired to benefit the lives of those who trust us with their care. Most of the past two decades I have practiced pharmacy in Sierra Vista and
I have enjoyed serving our community.

Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI
I believe in the mission of CCHCI, because it strives to break down social and economic barriers to health for all members of its surrounding community. I am excited to be a part of a growing team that works every day to bring high quality, evidence-based health care to as many children as possible irrespective of their family’s ability to pay.

JOINED CHIRICAHUA IN 2021
I grew up in Douglas with amazing parents and two overprotective older brothers.
Practice Interests:
I love caring for patients of all ages. I especially like interacting with teens.
Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCI
I believe in the mission of Chiricahua because it states very clearly “health care of all” and mental health care is such an important part of one’s overall health and wellbeing. Being able to assist Chiricahua with providing quality mental health care to all of our patients means being able to help change the overall wellbeing of all Cochise County one patient, one family and one community at a time. I look forward to bringing mental health care to all for many years to come.
My experiences of living all over the world encouraged me to be interested in working with people from all walks of life. Having worked with both children and adults in both a crisis and chronic case management setting I feel very passionate about my ability to assist people with all mental health questions and concerns.
I enjoy spending time with my two wonderful children, 14 and 16, my awesome husband of two years, and all the wonderful family I have located in the area. Studying for my doctorate program has taken away all of my hobbies but my faith and my love of travel still hold a special place in my heart.
