Family Practice Physician JOINED CCHCI IN 2006 Why I Believe in the Mission of CCHCII believe that underserved communities should have the very best providers given that so few resources are available. To work in a private practice is a profession; to work for the underserved is a passion.
Karen'S BACKGROUND
I spent the greater part of my childhood outside Charleston, South Carolina. I was moved by the many small towns and rural areas with nearly no medical care. My dream was to one day become a doctor for the underserved and the disenfranchised. During college I volunteered at a free clinic for migrant farm workers and their families. My graduate studies in anthropology and archeology at Harvard University gave me an appreciation for the vast diversity of human culture. In medical school I helped to start the Homeless Van Project – taking blankets, clothing, and medical supplies to the homeless on Boston’s streets or whole families huddled in empty horse stalls at the Suffolk Downs Racetrack. Relocating to Arizona, I fell in love with the beauty of Cochise County. CCHCI has enabled me to realize my dream of being a “small town country doctor.” I know I wanted to give to the community but I never imagined how much the community would give to me.
