Director of Community Pediatrics Receives Humanitarian Award!
On June 7th, 2015 Chiricahua Community Health Centers’ Dr. Darlene Melk was awarded the 2015 Arizona Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics Humanitarian Award. The AzAAP selected Dr. Melk for her tireless advocacy of children with special health care needs who live in poverty in Montero, Bolivia. Dr. Melk works through the Rosa Vera Fund, whose mission is to facilitate medical, social and preventive interventions for children. Despite the challenges that Dr. Melk faces such as distance, culture, poverty and political turmoil, Dr. Melk ensured that all cases of the RVF moved forward. Dr. Melk also spearheaded the planning and construction of the first and only comprehensive center for children with special healthcare needs in Montero. This center currently provides a level of service unknown to this region prior to a growing number of children who otherwise would have no hope to progress and thrive as they are now. Chiricahua Community Health Centers would like to congratulate Dr. Melk on this prestigious award and her dedication to Pediatric Healthcare.
